NAHLA WINTER
Every stage has different problems. Start where you are — or if you're buying a gift, aim one stage ahead.
STAGE ONE
0–3 months. This stage is about sleep, feeding and skin. You need more muslin than you think, something that helps with settling, and a routine gentle enough for newborn skin.
STAGE TWO
3–12 months. Everything goes in the mouth, so silicone and washable fabrics earn their place. This is teether, bib and floor-quilt territory.
STAGE THREE
1–2 years. Every boundary gets tested. This is when open-ended toys start earning their cost per use, and when gear that folds down for travel becomes worth the money.
STAGE FOUR
2–5 years. Toys get more complex and play gets more imaginative. Booster seats and packable gear become a real consideration once travel starts again.
