Baby Shower & Gift Guide

Baby Shower & Gift Guide

Buying for someone else's baby is genuinely hard. You don't know what they already own, what size the baby will be by the time it arrives, or what they actually care about. This guide is organised by that problem rather than by product type.

If you want something they'll definitely use

Muslin swaddles and burp cloths. Nobody has ever owned too many. They get destroyed, lost in the wash, and left at grandma's. A set of three is a genuinely useful gift, not a filler one.

If you want something they'll keep

A muslin quilt. It starts as a pram blanket, becomes a floor mat, then a comfort object, then something that goes to university with them.

If it's a second or third baby

They have the basics. Go for consumables or something they wouldn't buy themselves — good skincare, a sound machine, a lovey.

If you're going in with others

Pool for something structural: a playpen, a Montessori climbing set, a wooden play kitchen. These are the items parents want but hesitate to buy for themselves.

If you have no idea and want to be safe

What to avoid gifting

  • Newborn-size clothing. Everyone buys it and it fits for about three weeks. Buy 6–12 months instead — they'll thank you in half a year when nothing fits.
  • Anything for the cot. Sleep safety guidance is strict and personal. Let the parents choose.
  • Loud toys. You know why.
